Interior of a Thornhill detached house renovation, with pale wood floors, black furnishings, and a walnut vanity in the primary bathroom.

The ask

The clients wanted this detached house renovation in Thornhill to stay pale and still feel composed, with rooms willing to do more than one job. Sitting, eating, and cooking had to share one view. One bedroom needed to be both a place to sleep and a place to keep a collection. The primary bathroom was where the materials were allowed to get heavier.

The plan

We kept the floors light and the walls quiet, and used black as the line: the dining table, the stair rail, the bed in the second bedroom, the faucets. The living room is a grey sectional along the long side of the plan. A round dark table sits between that sofa and a light kitchen. The second bedroom takes a black bed, a desk, and room for objects on the wall. The primary bedroom stays whiter, with a dark dresser and sheer curtains. Its bathroom changes weight: a walnut vanity, a freestanding tub, and a dark stone shower with brass fittings.

The walk-through

You come down a black stair onto a pale floor. The sofa, the round table, and the kitchen are one room, seen from different chairs. Upstairs, one bedroom is black and occupied by objects, and the other is white and quiet. The bathroom is the densest sequence in the house: wood vanity, white tub, dark shower. Brass in that shower, and black through the rest of the house, is how the heavier room still belongs.
