Interior of a house on Plymbridge Road in North York, with wood floors, a white kitchen, and windows onto the trees.

The ask

The clients wanted this house on Plymbridge Road to feel lived in without covering the architecture. The living room, the table, and the kitchen all face the garden. The stair is already the centre of the house. The bedroom needed to feel calm under the wood ceiling, and the lower level had to feel like part of the same home.

The plan

We left the wood floors and the wood ceiling to do the work, and styled the rooms in white and burnt orange. The living room takes a pale sofa and an orange chair, turned toward the windows. The dining table sits in that same light. The kitchen is white, with wood cabinets and an island large enough to gather at. The bedroom stays simple under the peaked wood ceiling: a bed, a chair, and the trees at the glass. A white bathroom and a lower sitting room carry the same quiet down the stair.

The walk-through

You come in to wood underfoot and the stair rising through the middle of the house. The living room opens toward the garden, orange against the pale sofa. The table and the white kitchen are the next turn, still in the daylight. Upstairs, the bedroom sits under the wood ceiling. Downstairs, the lower room is furnished for a quieter hour. Wood and white hold the house together. The orange is the note that keeps it from going plain.
