Interior of a Thornhill detached house renovation, with white cabinetry, light oak millwork, and a pale stone counter.

The ask

The clients wanted this kitchen and bath renovation in Thornhill to make the kitchen the room the house gathers in, not a corridor on the way somewhere else. Cooking, sitting at the island, and eating had to share one space. The bathrooms needed the same wood, so they would feel like the next sentence rather than a separate project.

The plan

We mixed white perimeter cabinets with light oak where the hand lands: the island, the tall pantry, and the glass display cabinets. A pale stone counter runs the length, and a hood with a stone backsplash marks the range. Stools line the island, and the dining table sits in the same room, so a meal does not ask you to leave. The main bathroom repeats the oak in a double vanity, with grey tile in the shower and black fittings. A curved stair in the same pale wood is the route between those rooms. A smaller vanity goes darker, so not every bath is a copy.

The walk-through

You come into a long, light kitchen. The island is the middle of the room, the dining table is the end of it, and the oak returns in the glass cabinets and the pantry. The stair curves away on the same floor. The bathroom is quieter, and the wood vanity is what makes it part of the same house. Oak is the thread. White keeps the rooms bright, and the black shower fittings keep the baths from going soft.
